Why the bond is everything

Epoxy does not simply sit on concrete; it has to key into it. Bare concrete carries laitance, a weak dusty layer left at the surface when the slab cured, plus any sealer, old coating, oil, or curing compound applied over the years. Coat over that layer and the epoxy bonds to the contamination, not the concrete. It can look perfect for weeks, then peel in sheets once heat and tire stress arrive. Preparation removes the weak layer and creates a physical profile the resin can grip. Everything else in the system depends on getting this right.

Diamond grinding

Diamond grinding runs rotating heads set with diamond-segment tooling across the slab. The heads abrade off sealers, old coatings, and laitance while cutting a consistent surface profile, the microscopic roughness that gives epoxy its mechanical grip. Grinding works on sealed slabs, previously coated slabs, and slabs with surface contamination that etching cannot touch. It produces a repeatable, measurable profile across the whole floor rather than a variable one. The tradeoff is cost and dust: grinding takes more labor and equipment and generates fine concrete dust that a proper crew captures with vacuum-fed grinders. For a floor meant to last, that cost buys the single most important part of the job.

Acid etching

Acid etching pours or sprays an acidic solution across the slab to roughen it chemically, then relies on thorough rinsing and neutralizing to leave a clean profile. It is cheaper, faster, and needs no heavy equipment, which is why it shows up in low-bid quotes and DIY kits. The problems are consistency and reach. Etching produces an uneven profile that varies with how the acid pooled and how well it was rinsed. Residue left behind becomes a bond breaker of its own. Worst of all, acid does nothing to a slab that already has a sealer or coating, so on many real garage floors it barely touches the surface it is supposed to prepare.

Why the choice makes or breaks the floor

A ground slab gives epoxy a deep, uniform, contamination-free surface to bond into, which is exactly what resists hot-tire pickup and delamination through an Allen summer. An etched slab, especially one that was sealed or poorly rinsed, gives the coating a shallow and inconsistent grip that fails first at the spots where the acid did least. This is why the presence of a real grinder in a quote is one of the clearest signals of quality. Prep also includes crack and joint repair and moisture testing, but the grind versus etch decision is the one that most reliably separates a floor that lasts from one that peels. When comparing bids, ask directly how the slab will be prepared. A confident, specific answer about mechanical grinding is worth more than any promise about the coating brand on top.
